First Birthdays

In Parenty on Apr 2 2008. Add a comment.

So we were invited to a first birthday the other day, and on the invitation it say “[kid] only wants your love and friendship for her birthday.” I took this to mean “no presents” since there had been a long discussion about Christmas and gifts and stuff a few months before, and how she didn’t want her kid to have too many presents, then.

So we showed up, bearing a pretty card in the birthday theme.

Everyone else showed up bearing GIFTS. Including other moms from the playgroup. What would you do? Would you deliver a belated birthday gift or just say “oh well!” and move on? Especially since there’s another first birthday for someone else in the playgroup this weekend, and you need to get a gift?

OK, next question… what do you get a one year old who has lots of toys and books already? I was thinking about getting a card fo rht eparents that said “good for one free babysitting event”, although that’s not really for the kid, now is it?
