Oh, Indy…

I just got a good look at the kid who is going to be playing along with Harrison Ford in the new Indiana Jones movie, and I just have one question:

Where is his jaw?

He seems kind of… metro-like to be playing the possible kid of Indiana Jones.  But that may be the story line for a movie with stars of “advanced ages”.  How does our hero get along with a kid who is just so different from himself?  Will they bond?  How do you talk to each other, and let him maintain his independence and identity?  What do you do when he asks if he can hold your weapons?  That bullwhip is dangerous, and when do you trust him to be able to take care of it properly?  I don’t think I have very high hopes for this movie–I saw one of those large cardboard cutouts of Indy brandishing his whip, and the smile on his face wasn’t the cocky, self-assured smirk I lovingly remember from the last movies (even Crusade), but more of a great big aren’t-we-having-a-good-time-this-is-so-fun-guys-aw-shucks! grin.  I didn’t believe that he was an ass kicker any more.  This makes me sad.

At least Karen Allen is back; she rocked the hizzy in Raiders.

Mama’s Day Out–warning, girly post!

Yesterday, I was freed of childcare duties for the whole day.  It was awesome–I left around 9:30 to go to my favorite French bakery for coffee and an “Alsatian”: a croissant filled with a hazelnut, almond and walnut filling and a delicate sweet glaze.  Then, I drove to Albany to hit the shops, since I needed some new spring clothes.  Which I didn’t find, but whatever.  I hit up P.F. Chang’s for lunch (steamed dumplings and spicy green beans, with a glass of pinot grigio) and finally hit my favorite wine store for a mixed case, since we were getting low (and had no whites with which to celebrate the warmer weather).

So, meh, the clothes shopping wasn’t so great, but I did score some new curtains for Jack’s room and a cork board in the shape of a rocket.  I also went to my favorite cosmetic counter.  Yes, I like makeup.  Do I wear it often?  Not as much as I used to, but I loves me some beautiful eye shadow and lip gloss.  And my confession is that the best I have found so far is Chanel.  The new colors are beautiful, they last forever, and there’s something really satisfying about the way they are packaged.  They also make the best eye makeup remover ever as well as a really great eye shadow base, which makes the color last longer throughout the day (and is pretty as a little shimmer on its own) and is totally worth it.

I got home to a little boy who was very happy to see me.  It was very cute.  I had called Ben from the road, and he put the call on speaker.  When Jack heard me, the poor kid just lost it and started sobbing hysterically–guess he missed me, but didn’t realize it!

In love with a font.

I love the Archer font.  You’ll recognize it from Martha Stewart Living magazine.  Can you imagine typing everything in this font?  Mmmmmmmmmmm…  love love LOVE.

Too bad it’s so pricey, just like the lifestyle in that magazine.

We were watching “The Conscience of a King” (Star Trek, season one) tonight, and there were some truly fantastic quotes… I had to share them with you, they were just *that good*

McCoy: This is the first time in a week I’ve had time for a drop. Would you care for a drink, Mr. Spock?
Spock: My father’s race was spared the dubious benefits of alcohol.
McCoy: Oh. Now I know why they were conquered.

***

Lenore: (to Kirk) All this power, surging and throbbing, yet under control. Are you like that, Captain?

***

Kirk: Worlds may change, galaxies disintegrate — but a woman is always a woman.

***

Kirk: (searching for the phaser set to overload and blow up the ship) Double Red Alert!

And for your further edification, here’s a breakdown why you never want to be wearing a red shirt in the series.

Edited to add: McCoy also gets his drunk on in the sickbay!  On duty!  Awesome.

The longest month

Mar 25 2008. Add a comment.

I remember when I was teaching the last few years that the month before Spring Break was always a tough one.  February, the shortest month of the year, seemed to drag on forever: there were no long weekends, it was the coldest month of the year and darkest, and most people had colds or other nasty bugs.  The time passed so slowly, waiting for that break.

I didn’t really think that it would be the same once I was at home full time, but the month of February truly sucked, and for all the same reasons.  This time around, though, I didn’t have the large support group of other teachers who were also dragging their feet through the mire to get to the hallowed ground of Break.

Seriously.  Winter needs to be over!  It’s March, and there’s still over a foot of snow on our lawn, which probably won’t melt until May.  Coming back from warm, sunny South Carolina, this seems like a cruel joke, sometimes.  Oh well… the summers here are awesome, so it all evens out in the end.

You know what I hate?

When you go to a doctor and tell them you just had a baby, and they look at you and say “so, did you have gestational diabetes?” nodding like you did, and you say, brightly “nope!  totally fine.”   And they look at you like you’re nuts, because you’re obviously just a bit overweight, and somehow the GD fairy must have screwed up because, seriously, how could you not have gestational diabetes?

He’s gone and done it! and other stuff

Jack has officially moved his knees, right-left, while propped up, thus making a crawling motion forward.  That is about it.  He’s working on it!  I suppose this means we’re f*&%@d.  Time to babyproof!  I also decided to go back to the cloth diapers, and that’s much better now that things don’t look and act like peanut butter.  TMI, sorry.

It’s been a busy weekend.  Lots of family drama back home, and not much we can do while we’re out here to help out.  It will all turn out all right in the end, I have no doubt, but in the meantime, it’s going to be a bit of a slog.

I  keep hoping that I can get time to do some other things, but it’s not always easy these days, although I did just get off jury duty because I wouldn’t be able to necessarily find a sitter when they needed me to come in.  I had no idea that’s how it worked.  My first call for jury duty!

I love them.

That’s probably not a strong enough statement, actually.  I really love them.  My dad sent me a trailer to Ironman posted on Gizmodo today, and I’ve watched it three times.  I will definitely be seeing this one.

contemplating the crazy

I used cloth diapers with Jack for the first 6 months.  Once he started solids, though, things got crazy and I just couldn’t handle the in-between poop.  Now, though, things have, uh, “firmed up”, and I am thinking of going back to try cloth diapers again.  Not sure whether I am nuts or not.
