Hey y’all, just got back from Edisto Island, SC, where we’ve been for a week. Lots to tell, but am way too zonked right now since we’ve all been up since about 3 this morning. Suuuuuuuck.
Nice to be home, though, even though we came back to 30 degrees, snow on the ground, and we miss the beautiful coast and weather.
Last night, we decided on a near whom to go over to a friend’s house for the EVEnt. We had been invited for drinks and dinner, and to stay for the midnight festivities, but I have to admit to being very nervous about having Jack out of his routine (not sure if it’s his issue or me projecting!). Since our hostess was running in a rac starting at 5:30, we decided to show up at 6:30 after giving Jack dinner and a bath and dressing him in his fleece jammies. We packed his overnight diaper, his bear, his pack n play, night light, and his bottle, and off we went.
He was quiet and charming, and had this thing for gently touching the head of the little baby girl. He was very sweet about it, and was very calm even though it was half an hour or more past his normal bed time. We set up his pack n play, fed him his bottle, and put him down with his bear and he went right to sleep. We managed to stay out to midnight!! Together!! and Meet New Friends!! With such good omens, 2008 may have something good to say for itself. However, as Ben put it “it’s an election year, how bad can it be?”
So after midnight, we got all of our stuff together, started the car so it would warm up, and then off we went home. Jack was awake the whole car ride, but settled himself back down once we got him home and in his crib, and put himself back to sleep in about 15 minutes (thanks, Dr. Ferber!).
Welcome, 2008!
We had a really nice (if cold) weekend, going out to the downtown area and getting some shopping done for Christmas. While we were out, we checked Jack’s foot size, since I am looking to get him some kind of wind-proof shoe. AAaaaaaannnd… he wears a 3 or 4. And he’s 5 months old. Somehow this seems to be rather large, but then, what else is new?
On Sunday, we geared up for a big storm! 6-12 inches by Monday! but it ended up being barely 2 or 3 inches. I did manage to start working on my Christmas stocking, breaking out fabric that I had been hoarding from last year. I had been thinking about this stocking for a while, and had a pretty good idea of what I wanted to do. It would have a white flannel interior that would fold over the outer patterned fabric, and the cuff made by the flannel would have my name embroidered on it. Eventually, it worked out, but that’s another post. Probably one I will write next.
Lastly, I hosted playgroup for the cloth-diapering-nursing-organic-eating-plastic-free moms today and it was really nice. I made chicken pot pie (using my homemade turkey stock and the chicken I roasted last night) and had pears and honey for a light dessert. Ben says they can’t be crunchy granola types because the don’t wear Birkenstocks. It was really cute with all the little girls–Jack came down from his nap, though, and when he got a good look at everyone in the living room, he got really upset. He’s not really used to alot of people around all the time, and he got a little freaked. I need to get him out more, I think. Or wait, is that Ben?
Enough summary! I will put up another post on my stocking. I am really proud of it.
Some miles from where we live there is a very pretty lake and small parcel of land, called Moreau Lake State Park. I first went there a week or so ago, when the colors were at their peak and reflecting off the lake. It was very pretty, and Jack had a great time looking around at all the trees and colors. He’s always happiest when I am moving (stop walking and he voices his unhappiness), and is quiet as a mouse on these walks because he’s simply absorbing all there is to see and hear and smell around him. I want him to learn to enjoy and love the outdoors, and to want to spend as much time as possible outside and active. I hope I can continue these walks during the winter, but even with his polar fleece bunting with wool socks underneath, his little feet were frozen, and so were his hands. His core though, was very warm, and I could feel it pressed up against me since he was in the Ergo. Do I need booties? How can I make sure his extremities are warm? His legs were pretty chilly, too!
This last weekend we all went back to Tarrytown to hang out with the peeps. First we went orcharding (aka “apple picking”), then we hung out with the kids for the rest of the afternoon and evening. It was alot of fun, but Jack didn’t sleep very well that night in a new place, and spent most of the time awake or sleeping on top of my chest. We called it an early day on Sunday, since we knew it would be a long drive because we were so tired.
